Deals with the analysis of deviant lifestyles of youth in France compared with marginal U.S. populations. Rejects the idea that the U.S. situation exactly parallels the French. Establishes that in France the problem is less race-based but more a matter of social exclusion. Socio-historical introductory material treats the concept of marginality. Identifies differing methods of analysis. One work deals with developments over a longer period of time & is thus more concerned with evolution & its political implications. The other takes a microscopic/macroscopic approach. However, there are common elements: the notion of 'moral panic' which involves demonization & blaming of minority groups for national problems, for example. References. R. Ruffin
